New Tank
« on: February 01, 2010, 01:27:47 PM »
Hey Folks,

Finally I was able to purchase 4 pieces live rock and lve sand for my new aquarium. How am I going to know if the rock dies? I am just starting this tank.

I don't think the whole thing can die. Small organisms might but thats part of the cycling. Correct me experts if I'm wrong.

if you keep the rock and sand wet in salt water it will be fine...

Just make sure it is within 75-81 degrees and the salinity is somewhere between 1.020  - 1.028

Keep a power head in the water to circulate the water and the rock will be fine for a while

the goal now is to seed it and grow out the biological organisms...

this process is the 'cycling' of the tank

I got everything but a skimmer yesterday. I couldn't find any at the store and the people were no help.
I got a full marine testing kit, new shatterproof immersible heater, new 4 stage filter, and other accessories. You can't tell but there is also a bubble wall. What else do I need? It has 4 live rocks as well as a bag of live sand. The tank itself has been setup for awhile running with only water salt and the"dead" sand. Other than salinity what should I test for to know it is ready for new inhabitants?  I am so excited about this tank and I want to make sure I'm doing everything correctly.

if you just added the live sand and live rock, then i will probably have to retract my guess as to your tank being cycled...

again, when you submit your ammonia/nitrite/pH test results we will know then...
